Arkansas Self-Defense: Little Rock Man Shoots Burglar Breaking Into Neighbors Home :: 03/11/2015

A Little Rock man saw a man breaking into his neighbor’s house and feared for her safety.  He grabbed a gun, fearing the wheelchair-bound neighbor was home.  He was able to interrupt the burglary and hold the suspects at gunpoint, but when he felt threatened he did fire a shot, hitting one suspect in the arm.

Here is more from Arkansas Matters:

LITTLE ROCK, AR — A man witnessing criminals breaking into his neighbor’s home takes matters into his own hands and ends up shooting one of the burglars. The incident happened Tuesday afternoon in the 6700 Block of Wakefield Drive on the city’s southwest side.

Police identified the burglars as Termaine Braxton and Anthony Roberts. Charles Dorsey held them at gunpoint, waiting on officers. But before they got there, things took a dangerous twist.

Dorsey said, “Yeah, she’s like a sister to us. We’ve known her for 36 years or better.”

He’s referring to his neighbor who he says is elderly and wheelchair-bound. Dorsey thought she was in the home when he saw the two men breaking in.

He said, “I was more in fear for her than anything.”

It turns out she wasn’t there, but since Dorsey went to help, that put him right in the middle of a crime in progress.

Dorsey asked his sister to call 911 while he held the men at gunpoint. But, when he felt threatened, he says he fired and hit one suspect in the arm.

The reporter asked him, “Would you change it now, knowing what happened?” He responded, “I don’t know, I really don’t know.”

Witnesses told us before Dorsey interrupted the burglary, the suspects got away with some items from the home.

One woman, who didn’t want to be identified, said, “They were grabbing anything they could get their hands on. They took her TV and other stuff.”

Other people living in the area, say crime is common there and they’re sick of it.

One woman told us, “Don’t mess with us because we will get you.”

Braxton and Roberts face charges of theft and burglary. Dorsey will not be charged with anything.

The woman who lived at the home, but wasn’t there at the time of the burglary, was too shaken up to talk with us.

This is the 14th defensive gun use we’ve documented in the state of Arkansas and the 1403 defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.
