Arkansas Self-Defense: Halloween home invasion foiled :: 11/02/2015

Some real life goblins, ghouls and other monsters were prowling the streets of Helena-West Helena Halloween night according to Police Chief Virgil Green.

While youngsters were busy collecting their candy loot at various Halloween functions around the community, four would-be robbers swooped down on an unsuspecting elderly couple in an armed home invasion.

At approximately 6:27 p.m. Saturday, H-HPD officers responded to a 911 call in the 200 block of North 4th Street. The homeowner reported that four black males knocked on the door and said, “trick-or-treat.”

The homeowner opened the door to hand out the candy and one of the intruders brandished a shotgun in the homeowner’s face. The others forced their way inside the house.

Green reported that the husband was sitting in a recliner as the intruders entered the house. Two of the subjects pointed their weapons at the man’s wife. The husband had a weapon close to him as the men attempted to rob them. The husband pulled the weapon from the chair and fired a single shot.

The shot, said Green, missed the subjects, striking the ceiling.

All four of the males fled the house. As they were running away, they dropped two weapons – a shotgun and a rifle. H-WHPD officers recovered the guns.

Investigators from the police department’s Criminal Investigation Division were immediately on the scene interviewing the couple. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the incident.

The residents reported that none of the four males were wearing Halloween masks. Detectives were able to get good descriptions of the four subjects.

“The elderly couple was visibly shaken,” said Green, “ but they’re doing OK.”
