Are our gun rights being chipped away? :: 06/15/2019

Are we the proverbial frog in the pot?  Has the heat been slowly turning up on us and we're just not noticing it?  At what point does someone knock on the pot to get us to jump out.  What if that's too late?  What if many of us have been knocking on the pot and the rest simply can't hear it, or worse yet, refuse to listen.

In 1934, the National Firearms Act came in to being.  While banning firearms was deemed unconstitutional, taxing them was not.  Nor was making the process as messy as possible.  This act required all what was deemed a machine gun, rifles and shotguns under 18" and what was referred to as a firearm muffler, or silencer must be registered with the ATF.

In 1968 the GCA, Gun Control Act corrected a few of the unconstitutional areas of the NFA, mainly forcing a person to register a pre NFA item.  Also added was destructive devices, or anything over .50 caliber.  Definition of machine gun was also expanded.

In 1986 the FOPA Firearms Owners Protection Act expanded on the definition of "silencers" to include and parts for the assembly or fabrication of a silencer.  Also included was the banning of the manufacture of, or importation of full auto firearms.  Unless for Government agencies.  Hmm, I don't see a whole lot of protection for firearms owners there.

The first "Assault Weapons Ban" was passed in 1994 with a 52-48 vote and lasted 10 years.  This ban included certain semi-auto firearms labeled "assault weapons" as well as certain magazines considered large capacity.  In 2004 this law expired.

How about we just jump right to today, OK, I think we get the point here that year after year, they chip away.

Bumpstocks, unless you live under a rock, you've heard this used over and over thanks to the Las Vegas concert shooting.  The claim is, Bumpstocks were used and made the firearms more deadly.  Well, I'm not buying that.  IMO, far more was going on than we have been told, that however is a different discussion.

In 2019 Bumpstocks were banned.  No grandfather clause, no compensation for the owners.  Simply told we must turn them in, or destroy them.  But that's OK, I've had several conversations online with strong 2nd amendment supports saying it's no big deal, it's a joke, just a toy, it means nothing.  But does it?  I agree, it's a pointless thing to put on your rifle.  It's fun for a bit then gets tossed in the corner.  But that's not the point.  It opens the door to other restrictions.

What's the talk now?  Silencers.  We need to ban silencers because some nut job used them to kill 12 ex co-workers in Virginia Beach.   It's OK, most people have no need for a silencer.  Again, that's not the point.  The point is the government keeps turning up the heat and most of the frogs just sit there.  Worse yet, they all yell at the frogs that did jump out and are now banging on the pot.

More assault weapons bans are being discussed.  What are they trying to push?  No threaded barrels that allow for a muzzle brake, no adjustable stocks, no pistol grips, no hand guards covering the barrel, no semi-auto, no large capacity magazines.  I know I know, it will never pass.  You keep telling yourself that, it helps you ignore the heat of the water around you.

The bumpstock ban already opened up the door to ban other types of stocks, like adjustable one.  We've been saying it for years, they relabel a semi-auto sport rifle as an assault weapon, push the false narrative, the people believe it without question.  To make matters worse, our own gun owners fall in line.  I don't need a semi-auto, I hunt with a bolt action, so why should I care?  Well, the next step is to relabel YOUR bolt action deer hunting rifle as a sniper rifle and ban that.

How hot does the water need to be before you jump out with your hands holding your back side?  Or will you sit there until it's too late.  I jumped out long ago and have been beating on the side of that pot for 20+ years now.
