Anti-Gunners: Here's who - and what - the Ballmers are backing in this year's election :: 08/25/2016

Steve Ballmer might be better known now for Los Angeles than Redmond, but the former Microsoft chief executive is still an active contributor in Washington politics.

Since buying the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014, Ballmer and his wife Connie – a well-known Puget Sound-area philanthropist – have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Washington campaigns.

Steve and Connie Ballmer each donated $2,700 – the maximum contribution allowed for individual donors – to the re-election campaigns of Democratic Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Suzan DelBene. DelBene’s husband is Microsoft executive Kurt DelBene, who left the Redmond company while Ballmer was CEO and returned after Satya Nadella took over. The Ballmers donated $4,600 to the state’s Democratic committee.

The Ballmers' largest contribution in this election cycle went to Americans for Responsible Solutions, a gun safety campaign led by former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly. Giffords was shot in 2011 during an assassination attempt and, after her recovery, became an advocate for changes to the nation's gun laws.

The overall campaign supports gun control efforts including background checks. Giffords in 2014 campaigned for Washington state Initiative 594, which, after it passed, expanded criminal background checks in the state to include online sales and gun shows.

Now, Giffords is pushing for Washington Initiative 1491, which would allow families and law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily suspend firearms rights for potentially violent individuals. Steve and Connie Ballmer contributed $250,000 to the campaign.

Additionally, the Ballmers donated $20,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and $2,700 each to U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oregon. Connie Ballmer contributed $2,700 to Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Steve Ballmer did not respond to a request for comment.
