Anti-Gun Soapbox: League of Women Voters Edition-Increasing Threat from Gun Violence :: 05/13/2015

Gun violence is unacceptably high in the country and in Illinois. To address this problem, the League of Women Voters of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Area is presenting a program "Our Increasing Threat From Guns In the 21st Century". Bob Spiel and Mark Walsh will describe some causes and possible solutions on Thurs., May 21st, 7 PM, at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster, Lake Forest.

A representative from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America also will speak.

Bob Spiel is life-long Lake Forest resident. After earning his law degree from Northwestern, Spiel was recruited by the FBI. He retired after a 20 year distinguished career. Mr. Spiel will share some of his knowledge from a national perspective.

Mark Walsh is Campaign Director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, a non-profit organization dedicated to the reduction of death and injury caused by firearms. Walsh follows state legislation closely and is a frequently requested speaker all over the state.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement of American mothers fighting for public safety measures that respect the Second Amendment and protect people from gun violence.

Every year there are 100,000 victims of gun violence and a third of them die. Firearm suicides are actually increasing. What reasonable limits should be legislated? How can children be protected from accidental shootings at home? How can our mental health industry better identify and provide treatment for mentally ill persons who might otherwise resort to suicide and homicide? Are law enforcement personnel sufficient in number and optimally placed? How can we stop firearm sales to felons, mentally ill, domestic abusers, and terrorists and across state lines?

The program is open to the public and questions from the audience are welcome.

Gun violence is a complex problem and no one is safe from it. The League recognizes the right to gun ownership; the vast majority of gun owners are responsible seekers of sport and self-protection.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
