Amicus Briefs Filed in Support of Petition for Supreme Court Review in Peruta Right-to-Carry Case :: 02/25/2017

In January, California Rifle & Pistol Association attorneys filed a petition with the United States Supreme Court asking the Court to review the NRA-supported case of Peruta v. California, which seeks to confirm that the Second Amendment protects the right to carry a firearm for self-defense.

Last week, a number of important amicus curiae briefs were filed in support of plaintiffs’ petition urging the Supreme Court to take the case.  These critical briefs come from a number of diverse and influential sources, including state governors and twenty-six states.  NRA also filed an amicus brief focusing on the text and history of the Second Amendment’s “bear arms” provision.

The briefs are now being circulated to the Justices and their respective clerks.  The Supreme Court should issue a decision soon as to whether it will hear the Peruta case.  The NRA would like to thank all of the groups and individuals who came together to support this important case.

With the Peruta case before the Court and a possible definitive decision on our right to bear arms, the need is greater than ever before to have five justices on the Court who understand the true meaning of the Second Amendment.  The potential for this important issue to be before the Court in the near future is another reason that all gun owners must urge the U.S. Senate to swiftly confirm Judge Neil M. Gorsuch.
