Alabama Self-Defense: No charges expected for Alabama woman who shot boyfriend :: 05/29/2015
A domestic disturbance in Huntsville, Alabama, early Tuesday morning ended with a 32-year-old man in the hospital with a gunshot wound, but authorities say the woman who pulled the trigger isn’t likely to face any charges.
According to reports from WHNT News, the 24-year-old woman, whose name is being withheld, and her boyfriend were engaged in an argument inside their home when the fight turned physical. The man began choking the woman as a physical altercation ensued. But at some point, the woman was able to break away from the man. She retrieved a handgun and shot her boyfriend in the stomach.
The man, who was later identified as 32-year-old Nathan Lamar Hatcher, apparently left the home and drove himself to the emergency room. Medical personnel determined the wound Hatcher sustained was life-threatening and immediately underwent surgery.
Investigators spoke with the woman and after initial interviews determined that she acted in self-defense. No charges are expected to be filed at this time, but the investigation is ongoing. Records indicate the couple had a history of domestic violence.
As of Tuesday afternoon, there was no update on Hatcher’s condition, and according to local media, a spokeswoman from the hospital said he is not listed as a patient.
Authorities originally believed Hatcher may have been involved in a different incident which left a young woman fatally shot in a home a few blocks from where the domestic dispute occurred. The woman, who was later identified as 29-year-old Amanda Jo Scott of Fayetteville, Tennessee, was discovered after police responded to a call about a shooting close to the time that Hatcher showed up at the hospital.
Scott’s death was ruled a homicide, but police determined the two incidents were not related. The suspect in Scott’s case is still at large.
