A former teacher says arming teachers will deter shooters, make schools safer :: 05/18/2019

Kudos to Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida legislators for allowing teachers to be armed.

Many well-educated teachers are military veterans and/or extremely well trained in self- defense and the use of firearms and are willing and able to offer their students protection.

As a high school teacher and coach in the late 1960s, I was present at a school shooting.

At the end of the school day, students were in the lobby awaiting their buses, and an armed student opened fire. He wounded 5 students near me. Had I been armed, I know I could have saved some of them from harm.

Since that incident, I have been an advocate of qualified teachers being armed. I strongly believe this cowardly student would not have done this, had he known the school had armed teachers.

Another time, there was “a disturbance” outside the entrance to the gym. The glass entrance/exit doors, reinforced with steel mesh, were chained shut. Six armed men were trying to gain entrance by throwing rocks at the glass doors. Four of us (coaches) on the inside were armed with baseball bats. The police took nine minutes to arrive. The armed men did not gain entrance. I believe if we had been armed with guns instead of baseball bats, this disturbance would not have lasted past our arrival on the scene.
