4 students arrested in California school shooting plot :: 10/05/2015
TUOLUMNE, Calif. —Authorities in Northern California say they broke up a plot by four teenage boys to shoot up their school with the intent of killing as many people as they could.
Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele said Saturday the youths' plan was interrupted in its early stages, The Associated Press reported. The students were arrested after fellow students at Summerville High School became suspicious and alerted authorities Wednesday, the news service said.
KCRA-TV reported the suspects, who were not identified because of their ages, are charged with conspiracy. The sheriff said the boys confessed to plotting the mass shooting.
“They were going to come on campus and shoot and kill as many people as possible at the campus,” the Sacramento TV station quoted Mele as saying. “The suspects’ plans was very detailed in nature, and included names of would-be victims, locations, methods in which the plan was to be carried out."
Mele lauded the other students who alerted authorities.
“Their willingness to get involved and report what they saw prevented what well could have been another needless tragedy,” Mele said.
Investigators did not recover any guns but found written plans. They also confiscated electronic devices as evidence, KCRA-TV said.
