Pa. lawmaker's tweet blames Obama for Baltimore rioting :: 04/28/2015
Following a night of rioting in Baltimore, State Rep. Stephen Bloom tweeted a message Tuesday morning that seems to put blame for the riots on President Barack Obama.
The riots came after the funeral of Freddie Gray, who died from a severe spinal injury he suffered in police custody. Police officers were attacked, buildings were destroyed and police vehicles were set ablaze during the rioting.
Bloom, R-North Middleton Twp., retweeted a number of messages about the rioting Monday night from two separate Twitter accounts.
At around 6 a.m. Tuesday he tweeted, "When you preach a creed of resentment and envy, you reap a harvest of division and destruction. Yes, I'm talking to you, President Obama."
During a telephone interview Tuesday morning, Bloom said "I believe the president's rhetoric over the last six years has exacerbated many of the tensions within our society and moved us farther away from genuine, mutual respect."
The president's tone has encouraged division in society instead of mutual tolerance and reconciliation, Bloom said.
"There's obviously personal responsibility for acts of violence and destruction that rest with the individual whose committing those acts," Bloom said. "My concern is that the overall tone of our American culture has suffered under President' Obama's divisive rhetoric."
A number of other people are taking to Twitter to vent their frustrations about the rioting and link Obama to the violence and destruction. One of the more notable was businessman Donald Trump, who said on Twitter, "Our great African American President hasn't exactly had a positive impact on the thugs who are so happily and openly destroying Baltimore!"
